Can we qualify for food stamps if we own a rental property?

In: Mortgage

3 Jun 2010

We got turn down for reasons that we received rental income…but we also pay mortgage on this rental property as expense and the house is also way underwater. Also, when we told the social worker we pay mortgage for the rental property she change her reason..her reason for denying us now is that we make a little over in income BUT our income clearly shows a merely $800 for the one month. I am now confuse. Anyone have a similar situation?

If you can afford to make mortgage payments on investment property, you don’t need food stamps. Get a job!

You have assets which disqualify you for food stamps. It is not just income.

Yes you can the only thing is that they have a income limit if your income exceeds their limit then you won’t qualify or you’ll only receive for example $100 a month but if you’re income is $800 a month then you need another worker.

no offense, but you are missing the concept behind food stamps.

why not sell your income prop on a land contract….share its equity and get a new
party responsible for the debt

Food stamps are a safety net program. They are a program of last resort. If you own a rental property whether it is underwater or not then you are not poor. You certainly don’t qualify for food stamps on that alone.

Look at it this way…let’s assume the house is paid for and all you have coming in is $800 per month of rental income. That doesn’t eliminate the fact you own a home free and clear. You can sell the home and use the money to live on.

The same goes for what you have now. If you get food stamps for your situation, then every person who owns rental property could go out, mortgage it up to its market value and sign up for free food.

Sell the house! I highly doubt your entire monthly income is only $800. Is that your estimate after paying bills? Because government aid goes by how much money you receive each month, they dont care what bills you have, Learn to budget your money better,

What matters is the net income of your rental income plus your wages. The fact that the property is underwater does not matter to the food stamps people.

Go through your tax return and figure out exactly what your net income is, and check it against the qualification for food stamps. You may want to try this website to work through the numbers yourself: http://www.benefitscheckup.org.

Food stamps are to help low income.

They look at income before you add any deductions, just like everyone else. Just because you are spending your income does not mean you are not earning it in the first place.

You also have assets to sell. Do not leech off me and the other hard working Americans just to improve your profit margin. It is especially despicable that you are wanting to take money inteneded to buy FOOD for people in need.
