Florida has a Homestead rule, so property taxes will vary depending on if the owner is homesteading it or not.
My house is small and old, my insurance is 3 times what I pay in taxes. It is very difficult to get insurance on “older” homes, which is anything built before 1960. That isn’t old if you are coming from other parts of the country!
The new governor is working of lowering property taxes and also making insurance companies offer affordable policies, but why should an insurance company have to be forced to offer polices to people (including me) who choose to live in coastal regions subject to hurricane damage? It isn’t always somebody elses fault when things happen–if nature is causing damage, people should wake up and not live there, or if they do, they shouldn’t expect someone else to pick up the tab.
