If the credit card is only in the wife’s name and the husband is not a co-signer or anything he is not legally responsible for the credit card bill. Ifthey would like to pay off the credit card bill and it has went into collections, they company may settle for a lessor amount. Collections companies usually buy old accounts from the original creditor for for pennies on the dollar. As far as the medical bills, you might want to call the office and see if they can waive any of the charges. Hospital write off a lot of bills. Some hospital even have like hardship funds that will help pay these bills. You never know until you ask.

If I was them, in such a precarious situation I would hold on to the $5k for a rainy day and just pay nothing towards the health bills.
